Radiation Oncology building expansion

McLaren Bay Region announced today the groundbreaking of an addition to the Karmanos Cancer Institute Radiation Oncology program, located on McLaren Bay Region’s West Campus at 3180 E. Midland Road, Bay City, MI.

A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction on a 2,000 square foot addition and 6,000 square foot renovation of the Radiation Oncology building. The addition will house a new TrueBeam® system, a linear accelerator that provides more targeted radiation to cancer tissue. The investment in the facility is nearly $5.6 million.

The TrueBeam® system delivers many forms of radiotherapy, allowing technicians to tailor each person’s treatment to their specific needs. The device is engineered to deliver high doses of radiation with tremendous accuracy, narrowly targeting tumors while minimizing exposure of healthy tissue and organs. The technology also increases the speed of treatments by generating images 60% faster than previous generations of linear accelerators.

The system automatically synchronizes imaging, beam shaping and dose delivery, performing internal accuracy checks every ten milliseconds throughout the entire treatment. Images used to fine-tune a patient’s position can also be generated using 25% less X-ray dose with the new system.

“The TrueBeam system makes the difficult journey through radiation easier for our patients” said McLaren Bay President/CEO Clarence Sevillian. “Some treatments that once took 20 to 30 minutes can now be completed in less than five minutes, providing a more comfortable experience for patients and more accurate targeting. We are proud to provide this cutting-edge technology to our community.”

Local Bay City firm Serenus Johnson will begin construction this week with the entire project completion scheduled for April of 2018.
