Types of Gynecologic Surgeries

The cancer program offers the following types of gynecologic surgeries:

Total Abdominal Hysterectomy - This is the most common type of hysterectomy performed. It includes the removal of the uterus and cervix though an incision between the pelvic area and stomach.

Vaginal Hysterectomy - A vaginal hysterectomy involves the removal of the uterus through the vagina. This procedure can also be performed with the aid of a laparoscopic camera to enhance the doctor's ability to see inside the body.

Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy - The surgeon uses a laparoscopic camera during this minimally invasive surgery to remove the uterus, leaving the cervix in place.

Radical Hysterectomy - The surgeon removes the uterus, cervix, tissue surrounding the uterus and the upper vagina in this procedure.
