What is an OBGYN?

An Obstetrician Gynecologist, or OBGYN, is a doctor who has been trained in both obstetrics and gynecology and specializes in the specific medical needs of the female reproductive system. The area of obstetrics involves working with matters of pregnancy and child birth, whereas gynecology is more targeted toward treating a wide range of conditions such as menstrual pain, infertility, or ovarian cysts.

Gynecology

Your OBGYN will assist you with some of the most important health concerns of your life, including birth control, childbirth or menopause.

These are often very personal issues, so It's important to find a gynecologist you trust - someone with whom you feel comfortable. Women often find the right physician by getting a referral from a friend or from their primary care physician.

Often, your primary care physician can perform some of the important screening procedures, but will offer good referral information if a specialist is needed.

At McLaren our board-certified gynecologists and family medicine physicians are your personal advocates, ready with the medical support you need to take control of your own health. Comprehensive services include:

  • Preventive care, like pelvic exams, mammography and bone density tests
  • Proactive care, like immunizations, weight management and contraception counseling
  • Reparative care, for problems like urinary incontinence, fibroids and heavy periods
  • Restorative care for menopausal symptoms, like insomnia, decreased sex drive and hot flashes

Obstetrician or Midwife, the Choice is Yours

A certified nurse midwife is educated in two disciplines, nursing and midwifery. Midwives serve as mentors and caregivers for women seeking active participation in the "normal, healthy process" of pregnancy and birth.

Midwives provide much of the same care as OB/GYNs. This includes pregnancy, labor and labor pain management, birth, as well as family planning, preconception and infertility counseling, prescriptions, contraception, gynecologic care, cancer screening and clinical breast exams, immunizations, menopause care, sexual health management, sexually transmitted infections, and well woman and primary care visits.
