McLaren Greater Lansing’s annual electromyography volume likely ranks among top 10% in U.S.

Look no further than McLaren Greater Lansing Orthopedic Hospital (McLaren Orthopedic Hospital) for a state-of-the-art Neurodiagnostics Center that diagnoses nerve and muscle disorders. Physicians can refer children and adults to the Center for evaluation of pain, weakness, numbness, movement disorders, or musculoskeletal deficiencies. Test results are always sent back to the referring physician.

Three types of studies are offered:


Nerve Conduction Studies

The study is used to diagnose common conditions, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, and peripheral neuropathy.

Small electrical impulses are used to evaluate nerve integrity. Nerves in the arm and leg have both sensory and motor function. The study evaluates whether conduction pathways are transmitting information appropriately.

Very specialized studies may be used to evaluate diseases, such as Myasthenia Gravis, which affect the junction where nerves connect with muscle fibers.


This is a needle examination of selected muscles of the arms, legs and small muscles along the spinal regions of the neck and back. This test is primarily used to evaluate cervical or lumbar (neck or back) nerve root compression.

The needle is inserted just under the skin into the underlying muscle. Specific waveforms, indicating the presence or absence of nerve injury and its effect on muscle function, are observed on a computer screen.

The needle examination is used for diagnosis of ALS and other motor neuron disorders (polio, for example).

For patients with specific pain concerns, referring doctors may prescribe pre-test pain or anti-anxiety medication.

The test is usually well tolerated by patients, who are advised about each step of the procedure.

While preliminary results are reviewed with patients, Patients are encouraged to schedule a follow-up appointment with their referring physician for treatment recommendations.


These studies evaluate brain wave and electrical function.

Physicians refer patients for evaluation of seizures, epilepsy, attention deficit disorders, headaches, dizziness, fainting, and memory disorders.

Electrodes are taped to the scalp, and the patient is evaluated in a relaxed state. Brain wave activity is monitored and measured. Some studies are done, with electrodes in place, over a 24-hour period. All studies are reviewed by the Center’s neurologists, and results are sent to the referring physician.


This test evaluates how long it takes for a stimulus to reach the brain from a point of stimulation.

Stimulation points may be on the arms and legs. Visual and auditory impulses are also used.

Specialized EP tests evaluate Multiple Sclerosis and other conditions affecting brain or spinal cord function.


This is done by surgeon request. Intraoperative monitoring during surgery evaluates peripheral and central nervous system function at the surgical site. This is particularly useful in back and spinal cord surgery.
