Free High School Athlete Heart Screenings
According to the American Heart Association, the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest in high school athletes ranges from .28 to 1 death per 100,000 high school athletes annually in the United States.
In an effort to diagnose threatening heart conditions - and to give parents, athletes and coaches a little peace of mind - McLaren Greater Lansing offers a free high school athlete heart screening program. The McLaren Cardiovascular Group organizes several events throughout the year where high school athletes in the tri-county area can receive a free heart screening.
About the Screening
The noninvasive screening includes a blood pressure check, an electrocardiogram (EKG) to evaluate the heart's electrical activity and a review of test results by an McLaren Cardiovascular Group cardiologist. If an abnormality is found that requires more investigation, the cardiologist may choose to perform an ultrasound of the heart, called an echocardiogram. Results of the screening will be mailed to the athlete's home within one week, unless an issue that requires immediate attention is identified.
The next scheduled screening is Saturday (April 13, 2013) 9:00 am - noon. Appointments are required for student-athlete heart screenings. Click here to request an appointment.

The screening program, which is being offered through the McLaren Cardiovascular Group, will help detect any heart issues that may lead to severe complications or even death. Although the actual cost is over $40, the test is free for the student’s family. Please consider a gift to help screen our local students.
