McLaren Macomb medical lab earns re-accreditation from the College of American Pathologists

Published on Tuesday, November 21, 2017

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich.—McLaren Macomb, the 288-bed hospital in Mount Clemens, and its pathology lab have earned a two-year re-accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Certified by the American Board of Pathologists, the CAP is widely regarded as the leading body of laboratory quality assurance.

Based on results from a recent rigorous, on-site survey, the accreditation certifies the lab’s technical competency and its ability to produce accurate and dependable data.

“In order to administer effective and, in many instances, life-saving care, our physicians need accurate information, and that includes results from lab work,” said Dr. Dennis Cunningham, chief medical officer at McLaren Macomb. “Achieving this re-accreditation validates the proficiency displayed by our lab professionals.”

CAP standards adhere to those set by the federal government. McLaren Macomb met or exceeded those standards.

“When first achieving this accreditation, it then became our goal to hold ourselves to those standards and earn re-accreditations,” said Dr. Monroe Adams, chief pathologist and medical lab director at McLaren Macomb. “We are continuously meeting those goals.”

During the re-accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all patients, inspectors examine the lab’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the lab’s staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record and overall management.
