McLaren Macomb re-accredited as a Chest Pain Center

Published on Friday, November 07, 2014

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – McLaren Macomb recently received re-accreditation as a Chest Pain Center from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC).  The three-year re-accreditation recognizes McLaren Macomb’s commitment to offering the highest standards of treatment and care for patients with chest pain.

McLaren Macomb was first named an accredited Chest Pain Center in 2011. The re-accreditation comes after regular onsite reviews of the hospital’s patient care procedures by the SCPC. The designation is Cycle III re-accreditation with PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention).

"We are very proud to be re-accredited as a Chest Pain Center,” said Loraine Cusumano, RN, BSN, MSA, director of Cardiovascular Services at McLaren Macomb’s Mat Gaberty Heart Center. “Our re-accreditation demonstrates the ongoing commitment of our hospital leadership, physicians and great staff to be the leader in providing high quality cardiovascular care,” she said.

Accreditation as a Chest Pain Center encompasses many areas of the hospital’s cardiology program, including direct patient care, clinic education, emergency room care and planning for future development. To be an accredited Chest Pain Center, hospitals must meet the highest standards for the following:

  • Integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system
  • Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients quickly
  • Effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms
  • Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
  • Ensuring the competence and training of Accredited Chest Pain Center personnel
  • Maintaining organizational structure and commitment
  • Having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care
  • Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack

Hospitals with SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. They emphasize the importance of standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms.

SCPC is a not-for-profit organization committed to leading the fight to eliminate heart disease as the number one cause of death worldwide.
