5 Healthy Tips to Stay Safe this Flu Season

The best offense is a good defense.

In the middle of this particularly-dangerous flu season, this adage can be applied in fighting the spread and preventing contraction of the flu.

Kellee Necaise, McLaren Macomb’s Infection Prevention Practitioner, urges everyone to take steps to protect themselves, help prevent the spread of flu-causing germs and offers these tips on how to do so:

  • Hand washing – still the best method to prevent the contraction and spread of illness-causing bacteria. Scrub under hot water for at least 30 seconds.
  • Keep hands away from your face – for safe measure, keep your hands away from your face, especially the ‘T-Zone’ consisting of the eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes – cough into a tissue when possible, but the inside of the elbow is a good alternative. Never into your hands.
  • Dispose of tissues – After a sneeze or a cough, the tissue should be discarded and never re-used.
  • Clean and disinfect – don’t just wash your hands, but take the time to clean surfaces, shared objects and other items that may be potentially contaminated.

It’s also never too late to get the flu shot. You never know how long the year’s flu season will last, and even though it’s not a perfect match this season, can still protect against certain strains and reduce complications in others.

Should you come down with the flu, however, it’s best to stay indoors and away from the community. Before returning to work or school, you should be fever-free for 24 hours without having taken any anti-inflammatory.
