Expansion completed on Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Macomb

Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren MacombAfter two years of interior and exterior renovation, construction to expand the capacity and capabilities of the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Macomb, Ted B. Wahby Cancer Center is now complete.

Breaking ground in October 2014, the nonstop project has added 19,000-sq. ft., to the center’s existing 28,500-sq. ft., a second linear accelerator (LINAC) radiation treatment machine with room for a third and increased the number of infusion treatment chairs from 19 to 28.

But the most noticeable addition comes with the installation of a covered walkway connecting the cancer center to the main hospital.

“When we first opened the cancer center, it was always our goal to be the local leader, the treatment center of choice in cancer care for Macomb County,” said Dr. Arthur Frazier, radiation oncologist and medical director of the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Macomb. “The need for the expansion demonstrates our achievement in doing so while also allowing us to add so much more.”

With the added space, the cancer center’s clinical staff has been able to introduce new programs and expand existing ones, such as on-site genetic counseling and testing, expanded clinical trials and a patient navigation program.
