Make 2018 your healthiest year yet

2018 SunsetEach year the top New Year’s resolutions are aimed to improve one’s health in a variety of ways.

Statistics have shown that the vast majority of resolutions are abandoned by the time the calendar flips to February. And with the most popular resolutions geared toward bettering one’s health, discarding your resolution could prove costly in the long run.

Make 2018 your healthiest year yet.

“The New Year, a symbol of a fresh start, is one of the most appropriate times to really resolve to make changes for the betterment of yourself and your health,” said Dr. Kirk Garcia-Rios, a family medicine physician with McLaren Macomb. “Sticking to those commitments, dedicating yourself to them has the potential to pay off for years to come.”

Each New Year, the most popular health-related resolutions include:

Exercise more. Cardiologist Dr. Timothy Logan says, “Light to moderate exercising is the basis for increasing cardiovascular health. Getting the blood pumping improves circulation, reduces the risk of heart disease, lowers cholesterol and helps keep your weight under control.”

Eat healthier. Registered dietitian Allison Taormina says, “Keeping a healthy and nutritious diet doesn’t mean that you have to give up all temptation or your favorite foods. It means moderation, being cognizant of what you’re putting in your body and prioritizing healthy choices.”

Make own health a priority. Dr. Garcia-Rios says, “To improve your overall health, you have to first know where you stand. How’s your cholesterol? How’s your blood pressure and heart rate? Knowing these statistics is the first step toward improvement and creating goals.”

Make an appointment with a McLaren Macomb family physician to better understand your overall wellness and set achievable health goals for 2018.
