McLaren Let’s Move Festival of Races: Giving back

McLaren Let's Move Festival of Races

For the first time in its seven year history, proceeds from the McLaren Let’s Move Festival of Races will be donated to deserving and worthwhile local charitable causes—Macomb Food Program and Care House of Macomb County.

Organized by the Macomb Health and Fitness Foundation, the McLaren Let’s Move Festival of Races will be held on Saturday, April 29 in downtown Mount Clemens.

“Our goal has always been to grow this event to a point where we can give back,” said Bob Busquaert, director of the McLaren Let’s Move Festival of Races and board member of the Macomb Health and Fitness Foundation. “While we strive each year to add to the health and overall well-being of the community through our events, we’ve now reached that point where we can offer financial support to local social programs.”

Operating since 1975, the Macomb Food Program provides food to hungry people and families throughout Macomb County through a network of more than 50 pantries at no cost.

“Children and seniors continue to struggle with food insecurity every,” said Linda Azar, director of the Macomb Food Program. “Great events and people who volunteer are a critical part of our work and help us further our mission.”

Care House provides services to child victims of sexual and physical abuse and their families by providing a child-friendly place for services, including the coordination of forensic interviews, crisis counseling, individual and group therapy, support groups, child safety assessments, family advocacy and referrals to community resources. Since 1996, Care House of Macomb County Care House has coordinated over 6,000 forensic interviews and provided services to over 7,500 families, never charging them for the services they receive.

“Care House was developed on the foundation that all services would be free of charge,” said Dorie Vazquez-Nolan, executive director of Care House of Macomb County. “Child abuse can have a devastating effect on an entire family, not just the child victim. Our goal is to support the child victim and their non-offending family members through the investigation and prosecution phases and begin the healing process. We depend on the kindness and support of our community to help us provide these vital services to Macomb County’s most vulnerable citizens.”

McLaren Let’s Move Festival of Races will be held in downtown Mount Clemens with festivities opening at 8 a.m. with the half marathon starting at 9 a.m. Following it will be the starting times for The Better Half 10K (9:20 a.m.), Oakland University 5K (9:40 a.m.) and Buffalo Wild Wings 1 Mile Run (11 a.m.).
