McLaren Macomb participating in first-ever Richmond Health Fair

The first-ever Richmond Health Fair will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, beginning at 10 a.m. and running until 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by Richmond Community Schools, Richmond Chamber of Commerce and Richmond Police Department.

The health fair’s goal is to help promote healthy school lunches, healthy living and provide school-aged children and their families an opportunity to learn affordable ways to pack a healthy school lunch. The idea originated with district superintendant Brian Walmsley, who feels healthy eating is a big step for success in school and that getting the entire family involved is very important.

The event is hosted at the Richmond Community Schools campus, which is home to the district’s Will L. Lee Elementary, Richmond Middle and Richmond High Schools.

“One of the factors causing childhood obesity is families are finding it too expensive or too difficult to pack healthy lunches for school,” said Kelley Lovati, community outreach coordinator, McLaren Macomb. “It’s quick and cheap to grab all pre-packaged food for your child’s lunch, but those things tend to be unhealthy. The health fair will have demonstrations on what can go into a healthy lunch without costing too much.”

The event will be spread out between the middle and high schools. Maps will be available to show locations of all events, activities and vendors.

McLaren Macomb will be one of the many vendors on hand and will be providing agility and distracted driving tests for students as well as professionals from the trauma services department to provide information and answer questions.

Other activities will include arts and crafts, open gym, healthy food demonstrations, yoga, skits performed by the local theater group, bicycle rodeo and ACL risk assessments. A blood drive will also be hosted at the school grounds from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“It is important that healthy eating and exercise become a lifestyle for the whole family,” Lovati said. “Hopefully this fair will provide some tips and tools to set families up for a successful school year.”

Richmond Community Schools campus is located near Richmond High School, which is located at 35250 Division Road in Richmond 48062.
