McLaren Oakland Awarded Federal Grant to Add 3D Mammography Unit

McLaren Oakland, part of statewide McLaren Health Care, has been awarded a $500,000 federal grant to aid its expansion of its women’s health services through the purchase of a 3D mammography unit.

Providing images of greater clarity, the advanced technology of 3D tomosynthesis mammography allows McLaren Oakland diagnostic radiologist to more accurately detect breast cancer in its earliest stages for women served through its hospital imaging department.

Sponsored by Michigan United States Senator Debbie Stabenow, federal funds from the federal appropriations bills were made available through the Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services.

“It has always been our privilege to serve the community around our downtown Pontiac hospital, and to be provided the opportunity to enhance our services around women’s health needs is a position we are proud to be in,” said Tracey Franovich, McLaren Oakland President and CEO. “We are incredibly grateful to the sponsors of this bill that made this grant possible, but more importantly for the value they saw in this program.”

The advantages of 3D mammography allow radiologists to view breast tissue in 1mm slices, a benefit for patients as both a regular screening and diagnostic exam, as well as women with dense breast tissue. Though common, dense breast tissue has the potential to hide tumors, allowing them to potentially grow and become more advanced.

“McLaren Oakland has been a great partner and provider for the men and women of Pontiac, and this latest effort of bringing an advanced piece of mammography technology to the heart of the city is testament to that,” said Rep. Brenda Carter, Michigan House of Representatives, District 53. “This is an addition that notably enhances downtown Pontiac’s health care landscape, and we commend McLaren Oakland and the team that made this possible.

McLaren Oakland Diagnostic Imaging is located within its main hospital campus in downtown Pontiac. Patients can make an appointment with a McLaren Oakland primary care provider to obtain a referral for a screening mammogram by visiting mclaren.org/appointments.
