Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb Receives Comprehensive Center Accreditation

Published on Monday, June 01, 2015

The Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb earned the Comprehensive Center accreditation, acknowledging the Institute “meets the needs of its patients by providing multidisciplinary, high-quality and patient-centered care.” The accreditation was granted by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), whose objective is to advance safe, high-quality care for bariatric surgical patients through its accreditation process.

“This achievement is one that is shared with the entire hospital and staff of the Bariatric Surgery Institute for their commitment to our program,” said Dr. Carl Pesta, DO, medical director and surgeon for the Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb. “The Comprehensive Center Accreditation is a testament to the emphasis our Institute puts on excellent outcomes, compassionate patient care and dedication to a top notch patient experience.”

A unified program between the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the MBSAQIP accreditation endorses the Institute’s “commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and patient safety efforts for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients.”

Founded in the spring of 2012, the Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb has performed more than 240 bariatric surgeries (through May 2015) and currently has over 120 patients going through the pre-surgery process. Establishing a positive reputation for itself in both the patient and physician circles, the Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb finds the majority of its patients finding it through physician and friend/family referrals.

To earn the MBSAQIP designation, the Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb was subjected to a rigorous inspection process.  This was comprised of a satisfactory review of patient outcomes, patient safety processes, facility upgrades for patient comfort, and an overall dedication to the specialized care of the bariatric surgery patient.
