“McLaren Macomb is continuously advancing their supply purchasing strategies and collaborating to share best practices that support Premier alliance members,” said Durral R. Gilbert, president of supply chain services, Premier. “We are thrilled to present them with this honor as they work to provide high-value care in their community.”

One of 33 hospitals and health systems to receive the award this year, McLaren Macomb accepted the award at Premier’s 2016 Breakthroughs Conference and Exhibition in National Harbor, Maryland on June 23.

“Our number one goal is provide the best quality health care to our patients,” said Dominic Tranchida, manager of materials management at McLaren Macomb, “And to do that our physicians and staff need the proper tools and supplies needed to care for our patients. The proper balance of maintaining cost and number one quality care is quite an achievement.”

Supply expense performance is measured using Supply Focus, which include the industry’s largest comparative database of operational and supply chain cost information for acute care hospitals. Winners were identified using four industry standard case-mix-index-adjusted supply expense ratios and a peer grouping methodology to ensure that organizations of diverse sizes and complexity were considered equally.

Supply expense ratios are supply expense as a percent of total operating expense, supply expense as a percent of net patient revenue, supply expense per adjusted patient day and supply expense per adjusted discharge.

To be eligible, each organization had to submit four quarters of calendar 2015 data. With 40 indicators measuring and trending performance in cost and operations, Supply Focus enables hospitals to compare supply expense performance to that of similar facilities and easily identify improvement opportunities.
