Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic raises more than $100,000 for McLaren Hospice

Published on Tuesday, May 16, 2017

DAVISON, Mich. — Twenty-six years ago, Paul Streber and his wife Nancy made the difficult decision to move her father from Hamtramck to their home in Almont so that he could receive round-the-clock hospice care while battling cancer. Just five years after her father, Nancy Streber also passed away at her home in Almont, but not before making known that one of her last wishes was to give back to the people who cared for her father at the end of his life.

In 1997, Dave Streber launched the Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic to honor the legacy and wishes of his mother. Dave and his family have hosted the event on Mother's Day weekend every year since, donating all proceeds to McLaren Hospice.

With the support of family, friends, and dozens of community sponsors, the Strebers held the 20th annual Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic on Saturday, May 13, at Heather Hills Golf Club in Romeo. Through the generosity of event sponsors and guests, $9,050 was raised to benefit McLaren Hospice, putting the donations raised in Nancy Streber’s name over the last two decades well above $100,000.

This year’s outing was also played in memory of James Snay, father of a long-time attendee of the Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic. After learning about McLaren Hospice through his son’s involvement in the annual golf outing, James also elected to participate in the end-of-life comfort care and services provided through McLaren Hospice during his battle with cancer in 2016.

As a nonprofit organization, McLaren Hospice relies on the donations and efforts of our community to help care for terminally ill patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Through support from events like the Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic, McLaren Hospice can provide non-reimbursed services such as music therapy, and bereavement support programs including Camp Forget-Me-Not, McLaren’s grief camp for children.

McLaren Hospice is extremely grateful for the many sponsors, golfers, and volunteers who make this event possible year after year. On behalf of everyone at McLaren Hospice, we extend a special thanks to Dave and Tami Streber and the Streber family for organizing the event, as well as to Chuck Mack, Jennifer Lambert, Melissa Hamilton, Jenny Streber, Eric Tasker, and the staff of Heather Hills Golf Club for their continued support of the Nancy Streber Memorial Golf Classic and McLaren Hospice.
