Childbirth Education

The McLaren Northern Michigan offers comprehensive Childbirth Education to help prepare you for pregnancy, childbirth, care of your newborn and those early parenting years. All classes are held in McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation building.

Breastfeeding

This class provides the keys to successful breastfeeding.

Learn about the advantages of breastfeeding and gain access to resources and support systems. This is a great class for anyone contemplating breastfeeding.

  • Why breastfeeding is important to your baby's health and yours
  • How to get off to a great start with breastfeeding
  • How to make breastfeeding comfortable
  • How to know when breastfeeding is progressing
  • normally and when it isn't
  • Truth vs. fiction regarding diet, alcohol, and medications
  • Breast pump options
Dads are welcome and encouraged to attend.
NOTE: Lactation Counselors are available, free of charge, for one-on-one assistance and support. Call (231) 487-7195.

This course is best if taken in the last three months of pregnancy.

Prepared Childbirth Class Series (three-week series)

  • Normal labor, birth, and post-delivery
  • Positioning, to help the normal progress of labor and birth
  • Massage techniques to ease the pain of labor and aid in relaxation
  • Comfort measures, including use of a hot tub, hot and cold compresses, and pressure
  • Relaxation skills, including breathing strategies, which can be used throughout life in times of stress
  • Labor support, for the partner and the professional
  • Information about medications and medical procedures to help families make informed choices
  • Tour of the hospital and Women and Children's Care Center 

Fee: $50.00 for three-week program


Saturday Childbirth One-Day Class

  • Normal labor, birth, and post-delivery
  • Positioning, to help the normal progress of labor and birth
  • Massage techniques to ease the pain of labor and aid in relaxation
  • Comfort measures, including use of a hot tub, hot and cold compresses, and pressure

Fee:  $50

Postpartum Class

A 2-hour class to learn how to take care of yourself after baby is born.

No Fee.


Infant Care Class

A 2-hour class to help prepare you for those early days after baby is born, as well as tips on taking care of your newborn. 

No Fee.


Sibling Class

For expectant parents and children between the ages of 2 and 7 years old.  

$10 per family
