McLaren Northern Michigan Cancer Support

Recently Diagnosed

There is perhaps no greater life-changing instance than when you or a loved is diagnosed with cancer. Time may stop. Patients may feel immobilized. Others feel an instant need to gather strength and respond. Each patient's journey through cancer diagnosis and treatment will be unlike anyone else's. We are all unique and cancer treatment must be individualized.

Northern Michigan Hematology Oncology is the Hospital-based physician practice that provides cancer care for our region. New patient consultations, second opinions, and follow-up care are welcome in Petoskey and Gaylord.

We have assembled a collection of resources to help patients prepare for visits to our Cancer Center:

Finances are often a major concern during illness. To help patients during this challenging time, our qualified financial counselor is an integral part of the Northern Michigan Hematology / Oncology Cancer Care Team. Financial counseling can lead to peace of mind about medical expenses, leaving you free to concentrate on recovery.

Some of the services provided by our financial counselor include:

  • Estimates for future treatments, co-pays, and deductibles based on diagnosis and chosen treatment modealities
  • Assistance with questions about billing policies, billing statements, and personal balance owed
  • Help with understanding insurance benefits and obligations
  • Assistance with completing important paperwork for patient assistance programs
  • Guidance through the appeals process if denial of coverage occurs
  • Coordination with the billing office in resolving claims issues
  • Assistance for patients who are under insured or have no insurance to find assistance resources
Your financial counselor will work with you to find resources and facilitate patient referrals to organizations or companies that will help with cancer-related treatment expenses.

There are national and local organizations whose mission or charter involves helping cancer patients with different areas of their lives. Similarly, government programs exist so that uninsured or under-insured individuals with certain cancers can be immediately enrolled in state health insurance plans. Likewise, some pharmaceutical companies provide grants and assistance with the costs of medication.

If patients are unable to pay for their medical expenses and meet the low-income or moderate-income requirements, they may also qualify for financial assistance through our Charity Care program. Our financial counselor will guide patients through this process. Please call 231.487.3113
