Diabetes Services

McLaren’s Diabetes education program can help you successfully manage Diabetes by learning to control blood sugar through proper nutrition and exercise. Nutritional Counseling, also known as Medical Nutrition Therapy, plays a role in preventing and/or treating many health conditions (including Diabetes) and is provided by select registered dietitians on staff (RD). We also offer support group sessions and special events throughout the year to help ensure your diabetes management success.

Diabetes Education at McLaren Northern Michigan

The Diabetes and Nutritional Counseling Center provides educational services for patients with or at risk for diabetes. Those services include:

Group Diabetes Self-Management Education Program

Our AADE accredited education program for adults with type II diabetes consists of an individual introduction appointment and a series of three group classes. Family members and/or friends are welcome to attend.

Topics include nutrition, medications, exercise, monitoring, healthy coping, and reducing the risks of complications.

Participants will gain skills and knowledge in goal setting and utilization of community resources to promote healthy life long behavior change.

Individual Diabetes Counseling for pre-diabetes, Type I, Type II, and Gestational Diabetes

Individual sessions with the nurse and/or dietitian are available for assistance with specific diabetes concerns.

Support with Insulin Injection and Pump Therapies

We can provide support to patients following complex insulin regimens.

We can assess patients for their readiness to go on insulin pumps, and provide education to prepare them for the transition from multiple injections to pump therapy.

We are available to offer support for patients and their providers once using insulin pumps.

A referral for diabetes education services is required from the medical provider.

There is a fee for these services; however Diabetes Self-Management Education is a covered benefit on many health insurance plans. Please check your insurance coverage prior to your first appointment. (Billing codes G0108 and G0109).
