Bequests - click to expand

You may be looking for a way to make a significant gift to help further our mission. A bequest is a gift made through your will or trust. It is one of the most popular and flexible ways that you can support our efforts.

If you have decided to leave a future gift to support the mission of the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, one of the easiest ways to do so is by making a bequest in your will. Bequests are easy to arrange and can be modified should the need arise. Best of all, a bequest allows you to leave a lasting legacy in your community – ensuring that your neighbors, friends, and future generations have access to the very best care.

With the help of an attorney, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift be made to family, friends, or McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation as part of your estate plan.

A bequest can be made in several ways:

  1. You can give the balance or residue of your estate after you have made arrangements for your family.
  2. You can give a percentage of your estate.
  3. You can give a specific dollar amount or asset.
  4. You can make a contingent commitment for a gift to McLaren Northern Michigan.

Unless otherwise noted, your gift will help us to address the areas of greatest need at McLaren Northern Michigan at the time it is received. Your gift may be used to acquire new equipment or technology, address community health concerns, provide scholarships for nurses or build a new facility. You may also designate your gift to support a specific area of interest that you are passionate about by restricting your gift to a specific program or clinical area.

Give the Residue

A residual bequest provides McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation with a gift of what is left over after heirs are provided for or if all other heirs predecease you. A common residual bequest involves leaving a percentage of the residue of the estate to charity. For example, you may wish to leave 30% of the residue of your estate to McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. Find sample language here:

After fulfilling all other provisions, I hereby give, devise and bequeath to McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, a nonprofit organization located at 360 Connable, Petoskey, MI 49770, Federal Tax ID #38-2445611, ALL OR A PERCENTAGE of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate to be used for the area of greatest need at the time the gift is received.

Give a Percentage

Another kind of specific bequest involves leaving a specific percentage of your overall estate to charity. For example, you may wish to leave 10% of your estate to McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. Find sample language here:

I hereby give, devise and bequeath ____ percent (___%) of my total estate, determined as of the date of my death, to McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, a nonprofit organization located at 360 Connable, Petoskey, MI 49770, Federal Tax ID #38-2445611, to be used for the area of greatest need at the time the gift is received.

Give a Specific Dollar Amount

A specific bequest involves making a gift of a specific asset such as real estate or property or a gift for a specific dollar amount. For example, you may wish to leave your home or $10,000 to McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. Find sample language here:

I hereby give, devise and bequeath _________ and No/100 dollars ($DOLLARS) to McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, a nonprofit organization located at 360 Connable, Petoskey, MI 49770, Federal Tax ID # 38-2445611, to be used for the area of greatest need at the time the gift is received.

Make a Contingent Gift

A contingent gift occurs only if other beneficiaries are unavailable or in the event of a specific occurrence (such as the prior death of a loved one). For example, you could leave specific property, such as a vacation home, to a relative, but the bequest language could provide that if the relative is not alive at the time of your death, the vacation home will then go to McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. Find sample language here:

If (primary beneficiary) does not survive me, then I hereby give, devise and bequeath to McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation, a nonprofit organization located at 360 Connable, Petoskey, MI 49770, Federal Tax ID #38-2445611, DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY to be used for the area of greatest need at the time the gift is received.
