A Team Approach to Care

The Pediatric Unit is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by a Pediatric Hospitalist and nurses who specialize in acute illnesses in the Pediatric inpatient setting. The staff is also certified in Pediatric Advanced Advanced Life Support (PALS).

State-of-the-art equipment promotes excellent care with a family-centered approach by the Pediatric Hospitalist and nurses.

  • Pharmacy
  • Lab & x-ray

Additionally, through the"Partners in Children's Health" program, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital offers McLaren Northern Michigan access to a regional system of healthcare for children, designed to enhance care"close to home" for the children and families.

Pediatric Hospitalist

The Pediatric Unit at McLaren Northern Michigan is under the medical direction of a Pediatric Hospitalist.

A Pediatric Hospitalist is a pediatrician who cares for children exclusively in the Hospital setting and specializes in inpatient pediatric medicine.

The Pediatric Hospitalist will be in charge of your child's care, directing treatment during his/her stay at the Hospital, coordinating and consulting with specialists, closely monitoring progress, and staying in close touch with you, your family, and your pediatrician.

  • How does a Pediatric Hospitalist work with your Pediatrician?

    Upon admission to McLaren Northern Michigan, your pediatrician may provide necessary information to the Pediatric Hospitalist about your child's condition. The Pediatric Hospitalist, with input from your pediatrician, provides a personalized medical plan that takes into account your child's individual medical history and his or her specific needs.

    The Pediatric Hospitalist oversees your child's care, communicating frequently with other members of your child's healthcare team. Information is also available to your pediatrician to keep him/her informed of progress. Feel free to discuss concerns and ask questions with anyone on the staff.

    The Pediatric Hospitalist and care coordination staff will make arrangements for your child's discharge from the Hospital, including prescriptions and follow-up appointments. The Pediatric Hospitalist will also provide information to your child's pediatrician to plan their future course of care to ensure a smooth transition.
