McLaren Oakland now offers Tomosynthesis 3D Breast Screening Technology

Published on Friday, February 12, 2016

The McLaren Clarkston Breast Center now offers 3D digital tomosynthesis for breast cancer screening. This three-dimensional imaging technology produces a revolutionary type of mammogram by reconstructing a series of one-millimeter thick breast image slices into a 3D view of the breast.

This helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue.

With The Hologic’s Genius™ 3D Mammography™ system, exceptionally sharp breast images are produced. The system is designed to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance with an advanced ergonomic design, providing more patient comfort.

When combined with conventional 2D mammography, breast cancer screening with tomosynthesis has a higher cancer detection rate than conventional 2D mammography alone. Radiologists are reporting that tomosynthesis technology gives them increased confidence with a significant reduction in recall rates.

“We are very proud to offer women this new advancement in breast cancer screening,” said Carrie Wheeler, manager of the McLaren Clarkston Breast Center. “This new technology may be especially of interest to women who are at high risk for breast cancer or who have a family history of breast cancer.”

By offering women the latest technology in mammography, McLaren Oakland wants to increase the number of area women who will be routinely screened. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.

Margaret Dimond, McLaren Oakland president and CEO stated, “This is just one of the many investments we have made in diagnostic imaging equipment upgrades. This state-of-the-art system will allow us to detect cancers earlier providing the best for outcomes our patients.”
