Diabetes Care Close to Home

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how your body turns food into energy. There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that causes your body to attack its own insulin-producing cells. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body use glucose for energy. Without insulin, glucose builds up in your blood, leading to high blood sugar levels.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. It occurs when your body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough insulin.

There is no cure for diabetes, but it can be managed with a combination of medication, diet, and exercise.

People with diabetes are at an increased risk for developing chronic health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and blindness.

People with diabetes are also at an increased risk for developing wounds that are slow to heal. This is because diabetes can damage the nerves and blood vessels, which can make it difficult for wounds to heal properly.

If you have diabetes and you develop a wound, it is important to see a doctor right away. Early treatment can help prevent the wound from becoming serious.

If you have diabetes, it is important to take steps to prevent health problems. Some of these steps include:

  • Control your blood sugar levels.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Don't smoke.
  • Get regular checkups from your doctor.

If you have any questions or concerns about diabetes, please talk to your doctor.

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight-loss surgery, may be an option for people with type 2 diabetes who are unable to control their blood sugar with diet and exercise alone.

Bariatric surgery can help people lose weight, which can improve blood sugar control. In some cases, bariatric surgery can even reverse type 2 diabetes.
