McLaren Macomb is pleased to welcome low-dose CT lung screening to our patients
If you have a history of smoking, a low-dose CT (LDCT) scan may be right for you. A LDCT scan may be able to identify a lung condition before you have symptoms, and early detection is important. A study of more than 53,000 patients demonstrated that lung screening with LDCT reduced the number of deaths in patients compared with chest x-ray.
You may want to consider a LDCT scan if you fit the following criteria:
- Are 55-80 years old
- Smoke now, or have quit smoking within the past 15 years
- Were or are a heavy smoker, which includes 1-pack a day for 30 years, 2 packs a day for 15 years, or 3 packs a day for 7 ½ years
Most insurances cover the cost for a LDCT scan
Lung cancer screening is covered by Medicare for patients 55 to 77 years old and by most commercial insurance plans for patients 55 to 80 years old. Typically, there’s no out-of-pocket patient cost for low-dose CT lung screening, but confirm with your health insurance provider.
Your primary care physician can provide a referral to McLaren Macomb’s Lung Screening program after a brief consultation to discuss your smoking history and options. If you don’t have a primary care physician, our McLaren Medical Group physicians offer several scheduling options.
Scheduling options include in-person or virtual visits. In most cases, either visit type is less than 30 minutes with the physician. After the visit, our providers can help you manage your overall health through an ongoing primary care relationship.
