Diabetes Education

McLaren’s Diabetes education program can help you successfully manage Diabetes by learning to control blood sugar through proper nutrition and exercise. Nutritional Counseling, also known as Medical Nutrition Therapy, plays a role in preventing and/or treating many health conditions (including Diabetes) and is provided by select registered dietitians on staff (RD). We also offer support group sessions and special events throughout the year to help ensure your diabetes management success.

Diabetes Education Class Information

Today, people with diabetes can live full, active lives. By understanding the disease and knowing how to keep it under control, individuals with diabetes are working in every trade, occupation and profession, raising families, and running households. But such success requires effort. That’s why McLaren Flint’s Diabetes Educators offer a Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, Living with Diabetes, which provides instruction, guidance and ongoing assistance through a series of classes on living with diabetes. What to bring with you:

  1. A list of your current medications, including insulin doses
  2. Your blood sugar log and your glucose meter
  3. Your health insurance card and driver's license.

A friend or family member may attend with you as a guest without charge.

We will be performing a foot exam. You may find it easier to wear slip-on shoes.

We will be checking your blood pressure and blood sugar at class. You do not need to fast for the blood sugar check.

Group classes last three hours, however, we do take a break in the middle. We suggest a meal or snack before coming to class to prevent a long delay in eating.

Ever have one or more of these symptoms?

  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive fatigue and/or irritability
  • Blurry vision
  • Thirsty and hungry all the time
  • Unusual weight loss

Anyone who is having one or more of those symptoms should make a doctor's appointment and be evaluated for diabetes. Once diagnosed, education is critical to managing a lifelong disease. McLaren Bay Region offers three, three-hours sessions weekly at various times, including evenings. The series if taught by a diabetes education nurse and registered dietitian. Class costs are covered by most insurance. Pre-registration for classes is required by calling the above telephone number.

Topics covered in the diabetes self-care education series include:

  • Diabetes diagnosis and progression;
  • Meal planning and carbohydrate counting;
  • Understanding your blood sugar numbers;
  • Preventing complications;
  • Stress management;
  • Goal setting.

Support groups are available, along with classes for:

  • Juvenile diabetes;
  • Gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy);
  • Using insulin pumps and glucose monitors;
  • Administering insulin and other injectible medications;
  • Individual sessions arranged by appointment.

Flint's Diabetes Self-Care Education Program is certified by the Michigan Department of Community Health, and has met educational standards set by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).
