The Advanced GI MIS/Bariatric fellowship at McLaren Flint, led by Dr. Michael Kia, offers a broad experience in the care of complex patients encompassing bariatric and advanced minimally invasive surgery and gastrointestinal surgery. 

Program Information:

The Anesthesia Residency Program at McLaren Flint involves all aspects of anesthesia care including pediatric, neurosurgical, obstetrical, cardiovascular, critical care, and pain management. This four-year program received initial accreditation by ACGME in 2022 and at full complement will include six residents per year with one year of non-anesthesia clinical training (Fundamental Clinical Skills) and three years of clinical anesthesia training (CA-1, CA-2, and CA-3 years).

The Breast Surgical Oncology fellowship at Karmanos Cancer Institute and McLaren Flint offers a broad experience in the multidisciplinary care of patients with benign and malignant breast disease.

Program Information:

The primary goal of our program is to provide an academically and clinically sound training program for our fellows, so that they can acquire outstanding knowledge and clinical skills in general cardiology. The program has a strong emphasis on balancing clinical training with academic teaching and research. Academic teaching and research exposure will provide a foundation for a future academic career as well. The aim of the program is to provide the trainee with the basic and clinical knowledge, procedural skills, clinical judgment, research, professionalism and interpersonal skills required as a specialist in cardiovascular diseases. The training will prepare fellows to excel as highly competent cardiologists providing compassionate and comprehensive care.

Program Information:

The Michigan Center for Advanced Psychology Training (MICAPT) provides a two-year postdoctoral fellowship experience in clinical health psychology with an emphasis on medical education as part of a robust Graduate Medical Education program at McLaren Flint. The fellowship is primarily housed within the Department of Family Medicine at McLaren Flint, which is an engaging and dynamic system with opportunities for membership on committees, development of new services lines/curricula, and promotion of professional goals. Fellows gain clinical experiences in hospital consultation-liaison services, integrated primary care, multidisciplinary teams and group visits, psychosocial oncology, and outpatient assessment and psychotherapy. Fellows are also involved in teaching behavioral medicine and other clinical skills to medical students and resident physicians through formal didactics, as well as case based interactions and discussions. Additionally, opportunities exist for scholarly activity and most of the fellowship faculty are actively involved in current research, quality improvement, or program development activities. Upon successful completion of a MICAPT program, fellows possess: • Advanced practice clinical competency in Clinical Health Psychology • The ability to assume a leadership role in medical education and supervisory training. • Expertise in hospital and ambulatory practice utilizing a transdisciplinary model within a team process approach. • The ability to critically review research, make scholarly contributions to the field and adopt a commitment to lifelong learning. MICAPT Fellows are employed by McLaren Flint and complete all clinical activities in both the inpatient and outpatient settings to include the Family Medicine Residency Center, Internal Medicine Residency Group Practice, and Bariatric Institute at McLaren Flint.

Program Information:

The new Family Medicine Obstetrics fellowship at McLaren Flint, led by Dr. Brian Tesler, is seeking its first fellow to begin training July 1, 2024! At the conclusion of the one-year fellowship in Family Medicine Obstetrics, the fellow will have the confidence, skills and education required to function independently as an obstetric provider in both high-risk and low-risk birthing. The fellow will be able to manage pregnancy from preconception to postpartum management. The additional training in surgical skills and management will instill confidence to function within the role of a Laborist, including the ability to independently perform Cesarean Section, sterilization procedures, and operative delivery. In addition, the fellow will have the skills necessary to triage and treat obstetric emergencies such as ectopic pregnancy medical management and early pregnancy vaginal bleeding.

The Family Medicine Residency program at McLaren Flint is proud to offer comprehensive training for residents to become competent in the full scope of Family Medicine. As a first year resident in our program, you are trained in behavioral medicine, family medicine services – both inpatient and outpatient care, geriatrics, health system science, neonates in the intensive care unit, musculoskeletal & sports medicine, obstetrics, and pediatrics. In your second and third years of residency here, training consists of enhancing what you learned in year one along with acute care, adult critical care, cardiology, emergency medicine, gynecology, and pulmonology. Throughout the years of training, we offer longitudinal experiences in addiction medicine, common office procedures, caring for uninsured at the Free Medical Clinic and veterans at the VA community-based outpatient clinic, home visits, quality improvement & research, and population health. If you are interested in serving the underserved and want to be a well-trained family physician in all aspects of the field, then this is the program for you!

Program Information:

McLaren Northern Michigan is pleased to announce initial accreditation by the ACGME for our Rural Training Program (RTP) in Family Medicine, and our first class started July 1, 2022!

Rural Training Programs provide an opportunity for urban hospitals, rural hospitals, and outpatient clinics to promote rural training by forming residency programs in partnership. This program is a 1+2 RTP partnered with the Family Medicine Residency at McLaren Flint, which means the first year of training is in Flint and the second and third years of training are here in Petoskey. By the time the first RTP class graduates in June 2025, the program is expected to be at its full complement of 6 residents - 2 in each training year.

The Michigan State University Integrated Residency Program in General Surgery operates from McLaren Flint in Flint, Sparrow Hospital and McLaren Greater Lansing in Lansing.

The program is directed by Hugh Lindsey MD and Associate Program Director is Robert Molnar, MD.
