Newborns Don Red Hats to Raise Awareness of Heart Health

Published on Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Lapeer County – McLaren Lapeer Region launched a local “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign that will outfit newborns delivered at the hospitals with little red hats to raise awareness of family heart health and congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect in the country.  “Little Hats, Big Hearts” started in February 2014 in Chicago, IL collecting more than 300 hats in its first year. The program has now expanded to more than 40 states.

Heart disease is the number one cause of American deaths, according to the Center for Disease Control. Cardiovascular disease is listed as the underlying cause of death for nearly 801,000 deaths in the US.  About 2,200 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day, an average of 1 death every 40 seconds. In addition, eight out of every 1,000 babies will be born with some form of congenital heart defect.

“It’s never too early to start learning about heart disease and the affects it can have on your family,” said Chris Candela, President and CEO of McLaren Lapeer Region. “We hope this program inspires families to be mindful of the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle.”

McLaren Lapeer Region’s cardiology programs offers advanced diagnostic and treatment options, including minimally invasive cardiac and vascular procedures and robotic-assisted cardiac surgery. From complex and innovative procedures to world-class clinical trials, patients are assured industry leading, high-quality care for life.
