Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb earns re-certification from MBSAQIP

Published on Monday, August 06, 2018

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich.—The Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb earned a re-certification as a Comprehensive Center from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint national program of the American College of Surgeons and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

McLaren Macomb was first certified in May 2015. This re-certification was achieved following a thorough and extensive on-site review by an experienced bariatric surgeon. This accreditation is equivalent to the previous Center of Excellence designation from the MBSAQIP.

“Our patients come to us, putting their trust in our program and this designation as an accredited hospital gives them the confidence that our program has met the high level of standards set forth by the national committee in regards to excellence in patient care and safe quality outcomes,” said Dr. Carl Pesta, surgeon and medical director of the Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb. “It was with the tireless work of many dedicated people that our Institute originally earned this certification, and it was their continued high level of dedication that we earn this re-certification.”

Dr. Pesta also received the designation of an accredited surgeon with this inspection.

Meeting the standards set by the MBSAQIP ensures patients treated at the Bariatric Surgery Institute at McLaren Macomb receive “a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, which improved patient outcomes and long-term success.” The designation also credits the hospital for continuously seeking improvements to enhance its process, structure and outcomes.

To earn the designation, the Institute met essential criteria for staffing, training, infrastructure and protocols for care, ensuring its ability to support patients with severe obesity.

According to the National Institutes for Health, approximately 15.5 million people in the United States are living with severe obesity, which increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of obesity-associated diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and others. Bariatric surgical procedures have proven to be effective in the reduction of these comorbid conditions.
