McLaren Macomb approved for 8 licensed specialty care nursery beds

Published on Tuesday, March 22, 2016

McLaren Macomb’s Family Birthing Unit applied and has been approved for 8 licensed specialty care beds after obtaining a certificate of need from the State of Michigan. The added beds will allow the Family Birthing Unit to care for babies who have been born at 32 weeks of pregnancy or greater and to stabilize babies born prior to 32 weeks until transfer is available to a specialized facility.

A mature, ‘full term’ birth results from a pregnancy having lasted between 37 to 42 weeks. Should the baby be born premature, the greater the risk of infection, respiratory and cardiac complications. In these cases specialty care is required.

“There’s a definite need for this in the community and we’re proud that we are now able to provide this level of service for our patients,” said Jacqueline Jones, RN, BSN, MSN, manager of the Special Care Nursery and Family Birthing Unit at McLaren Macomb.

With this, McLaren Macomb is the only facility in the McLaren Health Care system with specialty care nursery beds. Previously, when physicians determined a patient required specialty care, the patient was referred to an affiliated hospital. McLaren Macomb can now care for these patients.

To obtain the certificate of need, Jones and her staff had to establish that their department met the standards set by the state, which include having a board-certified neonatologist on staff, respiratory therapy and lab on-site and nursing personnel specially trained to provide special care.
