McLaren Macomb Diversity & Inclusion Council receives Sterling Heights Diversity Distinction Award

Published on Wednesday, September 26, 2018

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich.—The McLaren Macomb Diversity & Inclusion Council earned recognition from the City of Sterling Heights Ethnic Community Committee with its awarding of the Sterling Heights Diversity Distinction Award. The award recognizes organizations that “participate in championing diversity in the city of Sterling Heights and surrounding communities.”

The letter to McLaren Macomb reads, “The goal of these awards is to increase appreciation of different cultures and to honor those who have championed diversity in the city of Sterling Heights.”

“In today’s world, our diversity and personal culture is not only something that should be recognized, but something that should be celebrated,” said Kelley Lovati, supervisor of volunteer services at McLaren Macomb and chair of the McLaren Macomb Diversity & Inclusion Council. “We strive to highlight the benefits of a culturally diverse environment and to be recognized for those efforts is a welcomed surprise and proud achievement.”

The McLaren Macomb Diversity & Inclusion Council was formed in 2014 when close examination of demographic data of Macomb County showed expansion of its diversity and ethnic make-up.

It set out on a mission to “cultivate an organizational community that encourages individuals to feel valued and an essential part of its success.” Additionally, it aims “to sustain an environment that demonstrates mutual respect and the inclusion of all regardless of race, ethnicity, age, socio-economic status, sexuality or religious preferences.”

The council’s accomplishments include the rollout of a monthly program designed to celebrate McLaren Macomb’s employees’ and patients’ ethnic background through cultural cuisine and introduction of a healthcare-oriented language translation service.
