Dr. Pesta: Mission Peru

Dr. Carl Pesta operating

It was 68 surgeries over a hectic three-and-a-half day period, but Dr. Carl Pesta gladly donated his time and surgical abilities to an underserved population of Peru.

The McLaren Macomb general and bariatric surgeon was assisted on this goodwill mission by Nadia Bounhiza, CRNA, and Crystal May, an operating room scrub tech, employees of McLaren Macomb.

Hoping to take at least one trip each year, Peru marks Dr. Pesta’s second mission in six months, having recently travelled to Guatemala, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Kenya.

While the surgeries were relatively routine in nature – mostly hernias and gallbladders, but a C-section birth also – the operations mean so much to the locals who have lacked access to the care they required.

“The experience is always very rewarding to help those in need, while experiencing a different culture,” Dr. Pesta said. “The patients often walk days to see us, have their operation, then walk home for days, usually with no pain medication.”

He plans to return to Peru next year with a possible second trip to India.
