Expecting moms: Mom welcomes first child while another welcomes third

The availability of classes and books can help a mother- and father-to-be get ready for their new arrival, but there is still a lot to be gained from the experiences of those who have gone through the first of a new child (and are going through it once again!).

Meet Erin, who welcomed baby Ella Kay (her first) in the care of Dr. Sarah Vyskocil
"Our baby girl, Ella Kay, is doing great! She was 7 lb., 1 oz. and 19 inches long when she was born and has grown so much since then and is currently in the 51 percentile for her height and weight."

"We ended up being induced, so we knew what was going on for the most part and didn't really have any surprises. We began the induction process around 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning and she had arrived by 5:40 p.m. that same day. The doctors and nurses did not think she was going to come that soon, since she was my first. The whole process went pretty smoothly. I wasn't in much pain (thank you to the epidural) and I had a pretty good support team cheering me on! The only thing that I can remember about the delivery being more difficult than I had thought was the pushing. It really takes a lot out of you and is extremely exhausting."

"I have been recovering pretty well! I pulled a muscle in my neck during delivery. The pain made it hard to sit up or stand for a couple days after delivery, but other than that, I've been healing really well, my doctor said. I was running small errands by the end of the second week."

"Ella has been doing great with sleeping! She's only waking up once or twice during the night so far. We've been pretty lucky with the amount of sleep we have been able to get. It helps a lot having a partner who is willing to split feedings during the night with you."

"My boyfriend usually works from home, so he's been here to help most of the time. He also leaves a few night during the week a couple times a month, so his mother has been helping out here and there while he is gone."

"She was amazing! She was calm and relaxed during the whole delivery process, which helped me relax! She came and visited the baby and I the next day to see how we were doing and to go over some things I should expect as far as pain and recovery. It was nice having her come the day after the delivery, because I don't remember a lot from the day of giving birth. There was a lot going on!"

"The staff at the hospital was very helpful and great at making me feel comfortable. Having someone come check on the baby and I every two hours or so was very helpful! The only thing that I would had liked to have explained to me afterwards from the staff would have been the bathroom process. I was totally in the dark with all of the different things to use after giving birth since Ella was my first child."

"The lactation consultant available at the hospital was wonderful! She stayed and worked with Ella and me for over an hour and made sure to answer any questions I had and even gave me her card to call whenever I needed advice or help."

Meet Nikki, who welcomed baby Henry James (her third) in the care of Dr. Linda Karadsheh
"Henry James is doing great! He was 8 lbs., 10 oz. at birth and 21 inches long, born on April 13, 2017."

"My son and daughter adore him and are not doing too bad. They are very helpful with feedings and getting diapers/wipes. At times they are a bit smothering, but we figure it out!"

"I am recovering great. I had my six week check-up April 27. I had an infection in my C-section incision but all is well and cleared up."

"I am probably getting about four to five hours of sleep a night. Of course it is all broken up. Henry is a very noisy sleeper so that doesn't help either."

"My mother stayed with me for two weeks after Henry was born. She did my laundry and cleaned the house for me! Of course she took care of the other kids too. My mother-in-law has been very helpful as well taking the older two off of my hands so I can try and get some rest in between feedings!"

"Dr. Karadsheh was amazing of course!"

"The staff on the unit was very helpful. But most importantly the nurses in the specialty nursery were amazing! Since my son was born early he had a ton of fluid in his lungs and had a few complications at birth. He was unable to stay with me in my room. They took such great care of him and were very helpful and honest about what was going on with him. Also, Dr. Abraham, the pediatrician, was AMAZING!"
