July Quality Corner – Joint Infections

McLaren Greater Lansing (MGL) participates in the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI). MARCQI is a collaboration between 60+ hospitals all over Michigan dedicated to improving the quality of care for patients undergoing total knee and hip replacements. Although MGL has historically been below the collaborative average in infection rates, there has recently been an increase:

Primary Hips:
July 2016-June 2017= MGL 0.3% (2 infections). MARCQI averaged 0.5%.
July 2017-June 2018=MGL 0.4% (2 infections). MARCQI averaged 0.4%

Primary Knee:
July 2016- June 2017= MGL 0.2% (2 infections). MARCQI averaged 0.3%.
July 2017-June 2018= MGL 0.9% (10 infections). MARCQI averaged 0.3%.

What YOU can do: Get “back to basics”
Keep the OR doors shut! Each opening is an increased risk for infection
Proper OR attire, worn and fashioned appropriately: masks, shoe covers, caps, facial hair covers
If you see something, say something. Encourage one another to be the best we can be.
