McLaren Stroke Programs offer a free education and support program series for stroke patients, people at high risk of a stroke, family members of stroke patients, and the community. Series speakers include a number of different disciplines including physicians, speech pathologists, physical and occupational therapists, dieticians, pharmacists, nurses, and speakers from the community. Educational topics change annually and are chosen based on group needs and requests. The first half of the meeting is reserved for the speakers and any questions from the attendees and really improving knowledge about stroke, therapies and treatment, and prevention. The second half of the meeting is allocated for support for the survivors and their friends, family and caregivers. This is especially important now in times where families and friends aren’t able to see each other as much.

Topic: Wound Care for Stroke Patients
Speaker: Tara Stephan, DNP, FNP-C, McLaren Bay Region Wound Care Center

According to the National Institute of Health, chronic wounds affect around 6.5 million patients in the United States. Many of these people are stroke victims who have become immobile due to paralysis and are confined to a wheelchair or a bed for long periods of time. In effect, a stroke victim can be an easy target for suffering from a wound infection. Join Tara Stephan as she discusses steps you can take to avoid the onset of pressure ulcers, as well as taking care of the wound as soon as it starts to appear. Participants are welcome to join the presentation in-person or via zoom. Participants are welcome to join the presentation in-person or via zoom. Please register online or by calling 1-877-411-2762.
