Description
1 in 9 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in his life. The greatest risk factors are family history, African-American ancestry and increasing age. Join us for a free prostate cancer screening at the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

The PSA test is recommended as follows:

  • Age 40 for men at high risk (those with more than one first-degree relative who had prostate cancer at an early age)
  • Age 45 for men at high risk for developing prostate cancer, this includes African-Americans and men who have a first-degree relative (father, brother, or son) diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age (younger than age 65)
  • Age 50 for men who are at average risk for prostate cancer and are expected to live at least 10 more years

What to expect:

  • PSA screening is a simple blood test that measures the presence of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) circulating in your bloodstream.
  • During your appointment, you will complete a health history questionnaire and have your blood drawn for the PSA test.
  • You will receive your test results within 2 weeks. These results can be shared with your physician if requested.
