About Us

Your Stay at Miriam F. Acheson Family Birth Place at McLaren Port Huron

The Miriam F. Acheson Family Birth Place features 18 state-of-the-art labor and delivery rooms, while at the same time offering pleasant, comfortable and convenient surroundings for the mother, baby and family after the birth. An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant sees most mothers and babies while in the hospital on Family Birth Place (Learn more about Breastfeeding Resources).

While the rooms are very attractive, they are also extremely functional, giving the family peace of mind. The high tech equipment and services that McLaren Port Huron is known for are there -- they just aren't as visible. And McLaren Port Huron continues to be the only area hospital with newborn nursing caring for babies who have special needs when they arrive.

Your Accommodations

Enjoy the comfort and privacy of a special LDRP maternity suite. Short for "labor, delivery, recovery, post-partum," McLaren Port Huron's 18 LDRP suites offer both comfort and privacy. With the exception of cesarean deliveries, your entire stay will take place in one room with a home-like setting featuring beautiful wood-tone floors and soothing color schemes. Registered nurses care for you during your entire stay so you can relax in comfort knowing your are in good hands.

Additional features of the birthing suites include:

  • Relaxing colors -- from the soft teals, blush and burgundies of the decor to the deep dark cherry of the wood furniture in the room.
  • Comfortable birthing bed
  • Birthing balls and additional comfort tools
  • Gliding rockers for mom and a sleep chair that pulls out to a bed for the mother's birth partner
  • Comfortable side bench for extra seating
  • Matching rolling bassinet
  • Bedside stand and wardrobe for the family's belongings
  • Over-bed table for eating in bed
  • Side table and chairs for dining out of bed with your family

Designated Obstetric OR

Cesarean births are performed on the maternity floor. A fully-equipped Operating Room is located within the Birth Place unit to accommodate scheduled or emergency cesarean births. The baby's father, or designated support person, is permitted to be with you during your baby's birth.

Rooming with Baby

At McLaren Port Huron we believe in family-centered care and make every effort to help you form a strong bond with your newborn. We encourage you to keep your baby with you as much as possible. This special time gives you the opportunity to learn your baby's personality and schedule while still having the support of our nursing staff. However, the nursery is always available as a secure option if the need arises.

Security and Safety

We believe in family-centered care and in providing a safe and secure environment for you and your newborn.

  • Miriam F. Acheson Family Birth Place is a secured unit. Mom’s first and last name must be provided to enter Family Birth Place.
  • To respect your privacy and comfort and to ensure safe care, we suggest no more than 3 family members/friends/support persons at your bedside at one time during labor, delivery, and through the first hour after delivery.
  • Family and friends are asked to ensure a clear path to the mother and baby at all times
  • Family and friends are welcome to provide emotional support to you (the patient) unless their presence infringes on other patient’s rights, compromises safety, and/or is medically or therapeutically contraindicated. Such times include:
    • During epidural procedures
    • During labor and the delivery
    • During the first hour of recovery after birth
  • Family and friends should not visit when respiratory viruses are common in the community.
  • Quiet time is observed between 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. to promote rest, healing and bonding.
