Therapeutic Massage

Massage Therapy Techniques

The therapist will work with you to determine your goals and tailor your massage to meet those goals; designed with specific outcomes beyond general relaxation.

Massage therapy services offered at McLaren Port Huron include the following integrative massage techniques:

  • Deep Tissue massage
  • Neuromuscular Therapy
  • Myofascial Release
  • Aromatherapy
  • Reflexology

A Description of Massage Therapy Techniques

  • Deep Tissue Massage - Most commonly, deep tissue technique(s) are applied to one or two areas of the body during an otherwise relaxing, full-body, Swedish-style massage, which allows for a full-body treatment with focus to specific problem areas. Neuromuscular Therapy - Muscles can develop "trigger points" - a hyper-irritable spot that is painful. The goal of neuromuscular therapy is to relieve the pain and any other dysfunction by having the therapist locate and deactivate those points by using varying amounts of pressure. Many times, pain relief and increased range of motion can be experienced immediately. Following the deactivation of the trigger point the therapist often will gently stretch the muscles to help "retrain" them - helping to prevent the pain and trigger point from reactivation.
  • Myofascial Release - Myofascial Release is a safe and effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.
  • Aromatherapy - Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of plant-derived, aromatic essential oils to promote physical and psychological well-being. It is sometimes used in combination with massage and other therapeutic techniques as part of a holistic treatment approach.
  • Reflexology - Reflexology is a therapeutic method of relieving pain by stimulating predefined pressure points on the feet and hands.
  • Energy Balancing - A general term to describe a variety of practices aimed at balancing the flow of energy in and around the body. Practitioners generally try to remove blockages, and balance and amplify this energy flow.

What to expect during your therapeutic massage:

  • The therapist will ask you to undress ( many people keep their underwear on) while the massage therapist is out of the room, and lie down under a sheet on a massage table.
  • To ensure you are ready the therapist will knock on the door before re-entering the room. The therapist will ensure your comfort by adjusting pillow and bolsters before beginning the massage.
  • The massage therapist will use a light lotion on the skin to begin the massage. A full body massage usually begins on the back and then moves down to the legs. You will then turn over and the massage will continue on your legs, arms and neck.<
  • You are underneath a sheet the entire time, only the body part being treated at any time is uncovered.
  • Once the massage session is complete, the massage therapist will leave the room while you get dressed.
  • Massage should not hurt. During a massage there may be mild aching when a therapist applies pressure over a knot or other areas of tension. Please inform the therapist if the pressure is too much for you. Most people feel calm and relaxed after a massage. Occasionally, people can experience mild temporary aching for a day.
