What is Stasis Dermatitis?

Author: Liz Kovac

Stasis dermatitis is a long-term condition that occurs when circulatory issues cause fluid to build up in the lower legs,” said Dr. Kevin Florek, Hyperbaric Physician at McLaren Lapeer Region Wound and Hyperbaric Center. “The swelling produces pressure beneath the skin and prevents adequate blood and oxygen from reaching the skin.”

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

  • Thickened, discolored skin on ankles and shins
  • Swelling of legs or feet
  • Open, oozing, or crusting sores on shins
  • Itching on shins

CONTRIBUTING CONDITIONS

While women are at higher risk, men can also experience stasis dermatitis. Contributing conditions include:

  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney disease
  • Old age
  • Standing/sitting for extended periods
  • Varicose veins
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Blood clots

TREATMENT

“When it comes to stasis dermatitis, the treatment of contributing conditions is as important as treating the stasis dermatitis itself,” said Dr. Florek. Talk to your doctor regarding the best course of action.

General Stasis Dermatitis treatment can include:

  • Wearing compression socks
  • Sleeping with legs elevated
  • Applying appropriate dressings to sores
