McLaren Northern Michigan, the 202-bed, Petoskey-based regional hospital serving 22 counties, has been recognized by Healthgrades with a pair of honors for its proficiency in cardiovascular services. A leading nationwide resource for comprehensive healthcare consumer information for patients to make informed medical decisions, Healthgrades has acknowledged the high level of specialty care and enhanced results at McLaren Northern Michigan with:

  • America's 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care Award
  • America's 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention Award

Additionally, the hospital was recognized with Healthgrades' Pulmonary Care Excellence Award.

Measuring and scoring clinical outcomes, patient safety and patient experience alongside other quality measurements as the basis of its criteria, Healthgrades compared more than 4,400 hospitals across the United States. With its pair of recognitions, McLaren Northern Michigan ranks among the top heart care programs in the country.

As a referral hospital, McLaren Northern Michigan is one of few resources for specialty medical care in the region.

"With the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and cardiac emergencies, you want your community to feel a sense of comfort in knowing there is a resource available to them to provide effective and efficient heart care,” said Dr. Harry Colfer, a cardiovascular surgeon with McLaren Northern Michigan. "We're honored to have earned these recognitions, and we share them with the staff who made these achievements possible. Most importantly, though, we're proud to be able to be that resource for our region."

Regarding the Cardiac Care Award, Healthgrades recognizes hospitals' ability to successfully perform heart bypass surgery, coronary interventional procedures and heart valve surgery, and treat heart attacks and heart failure. The Coronary Intervention Award specifies a hospital's expertise in performing coronary intervention procedures, such as an angioplasty with a stent.

The team of cardiologists and clinical professionals in the cardiovascular services department have worked to build and expand the program over recent years, regularly introducing new, leading-edge procedures to address the many forms of chronic heart disease while remaining proficient in emergency — potentially lifesaving — care.

McLaren Northern Michigan has continuously been recognized for its cardiovascular care, earning designation as one of the nation's 50 top performing cardiovascular hospital by Fortune and IBM Watson Health for five consecutive years.

These awards join recent recognitions that ranked McLaren Northern Michigan as the nation's top medium community hospital from Fortune/Merative. The hospital also achieved multiple, high-level honors for its stroke care from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.

The various forms of cardiovascular disease are the leading cause of death in the United States, responsible for one out of every five deaths.
