Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer™ Celebration Ice Show raises thousands to support Karmanos breast cancer research

A cold February night with a slight drizzle was perfect for the fifth annual Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer™ Detroit Celebration Ice Show at Campus Martius Park in Detroit. Many professional, local and volunteer skaters came out to perform choreographed routines and support cancer research at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

“This year’s event had 76 fundraising participants who garnered support from 215 donors,” said Kim Volante from the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation, the organization that puts on the event every year. “In addition to our fundraisers, our ice show featured seven invited elite skaters, including World Champion and two-time Olympian Yuka Sato, Olympic Bronze Medalist and four-time U.S. National Champion Jeremy Abbott, and two-time U.S. National Champion Alissa Czisny. With over $21,000 raised to date, this year is our highest fundraising total ever in Detroit!”

The Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to changing the future of cancer by funding innovative research that treats cancer while sparing the patient. CARES stands for Cancer Alliance for Research, Education and Survivorship. When the foundation looks for healthcare partners, they aim to align with like-minded organizations working in the communities where they host their fundraisers. This is the fifth year the foundation has partnered with Karmanos to benefit cancer research.

“As one of only two NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Michigan and the largest cancer care provider in the state, the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation is proud to support Karmanos Cancer Institute for the fifth consecutive year,” said Volante. “We want to help keep high-quality care and cutting-edge clinical trials accessible.”

Proceeds from this year’s ice show will go toward breast cancer research led by Hadeel Assad, M.D., medical oncologist, member of the Breast Cancer and Phase 1 Clinical Trials Multidisciplinary Teams, and member of the Molecular Therapeutics and the Population Studies and Disparities Research Programs.
