McLaren Flint First Area Hospital to Acquire Newest Robot

McLaren Flint continues to be the region’s leader in the use of the daVinci® Surgical System. The hospital has invested in the latest version of Intuitive’s robotic equipment called the daVinci Xi. It was installed in the O.R. on October 19. Patients are already benefitting from its capabilities.

Benefits of the daVinci Xi include:

  • More mobility, (previous versions were fixed). The Xi has an overhead instrument arm architecture designed to facilitate anatomical access from virtually any position.
  • Enhanced digital architecture that creates a simpler, more compact design with improved vision definition and clarity.
  • Capability of attaching the endoscope to any arm, providing flexibility for visualizing the surgical site.
  • Smaller, thinner robotic arms with newly designed joints that offer a greater range of motion than previous versions.
  • Longer instrumentation shafts designed to give surgeons greater operative reach.
  • It has its own patient surgical bed that works with a target device on the robot that allows specific anatomy selections so the two line up appropriately.
  • The System can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery.

Since becoming the first hospital in the region to invest in robotic surgical equipment in 2005, McLaren Flint surgeons have performed over 4,000 procedures. This technology will offer patients with even more complex surgical needs the benefits of this minimally invasive surgery.
