Nutritional Counseling

McLaren's Outpatient Nutrition Education Programs provides instruction, guidance and assistance through consultations with a Registered Dietitian. The main goal is to establish a healthy weight to improve health outcomes and/or quality of life. Individual nutrition counseling for adults and children and/or families care providers for the following:

  • Metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes
  • Overweight and/or underweight
  • High blood pressure and/or cholesterol
  • Childhood obesity or failure to thrive
  • Digestive concerns – constipation, diarrhea, heart burn, IBS, colitis, Crohn's disease, etc.
  • Food allergies or intolerances such as celiac disease or lactose intolerance
  • Nutritional deficiencies – anemia, Vitamin D deficiency, depleted protein stores, etc.
  • Infant/toddler feeding
  • Vegetarianism
  • Cancer
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Metabolic concerns – thyroid disease and/or weight gain/loss
  • Life cycle nutrition in gestation, menopause, geriatrics, etc.
  • General interest in nutrition and/or improving health outcome through lifestyle

Registered Dietitian

McLaren locations across Michigan offer classes and tools to aid in the learning and management of the disease. By attending our diabetes self-management education classes, taught by both a registered nurse (RN) and a registered dietitian (RD), you will:

  • Meet individually with a Registered Dietitian and or Registered Nurse to discuss the diabetes issues specific to you. This includes developing a plan that is customized to your needs.
  • Receive instruction that includes basic understanding of diabetes; how to monitor, managing blood glucose patterns; preventing complications; basic carbohydrate counting, understanding how to balance diet, activity, medications, and stress; managing hypoglycemia; and much more.
  • Receive a meal plan and instruction from a registered dietitian.
  • Receive information on our group classes designed to provide patients and families quality support, knowledge and technical skills needed to successfully self-manage their diabetes and develop a healthy lifestyle.
