McLaren Health Care Names Robert Flora Chief Academic Officer/Designated Institutional Officer (CAO/DIO)

Robert F. Flora, MD, MBA, MPH, has been appointed chief academic officer/designated institutional officer (CAO/DIO) for McLaren Health Care Corporation, effective Oct. 17, 2016.

“Robert Flora is a highly accomplished medical professional with an impressive background in graduate medical education administration,” said Michael McKenna, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer, McLaren Health Care. “In addition to his extensive academic appointments, publications, research grants, honors and activities, his track record as a medical education administrator has been exceptional, and his knowledge and experience certainly will be great assets for McLaren Health Care.”

Flora’s responsibilities include administering all McLaren Health Care graduate medical education (GME) programs; ensuring McLaren meets all applicable requirements set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education as well as other professional, educational, accreditation and regulatory standards; and supervising all academic-related scholarly activity within the McLaren system and as it relates to its clinical and academic partners. 

With a career that spans more than 20 years in health care, Flora comes to McLaren from Providence-Providence Park Hospital in Southfield and in Novi, where he served as director of medical education and DIO. Currently, he holds the position of professor and associate chair for education of obstetrics and gynecology at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. In 2015, Flora worked to expand the College of Human Medicine, managing the development of its campus in Southeast Michigan.

Prior to his employment at Providence, Flora served as professor and vice chair, obstetrics and gynecology, at Northeast Ohio Medical University, Rootstown, Ohio. From 1997 to 2012, he worked as founding section chief of urogynecology and reconstruction pelvic surgery at Summa Health System, Akron, Ohio.

They truly are working toward the triple aim of better population health, better patient experience, and reducing cost while maintaining quality and patient satisfaction. The responsibility of training medical students and resident physicians toward the triple aim is my way of paying back the opportunities that have been given to me during my clinical years.”

Flora, 55, holds an MBA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, as well as a master’s degree in public health from the University of Akron/Northeast Ohio Medical University. He completed his medical degree and residency training at the Medical College of Ohio, Toledo, and fellowship training in Connecticut and New York. He is board certified in public health, obstetrics and gynecology, as well as in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. Flora resides in Novi with his wife, Linda, who also is an OB-GYN physician. They have one daughter, Jenna, who is pursuing a graduate degree in business at Michigan State University.
