Injury Prevention Outreach Programs at McLaren Flint

A Matter of Balance

This evidence-based program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls in the older adult population.  These classes are provided at community centers throughout the area and are geared toward people that have concerns about falling, have sustained a fall, are interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength, and anyone who has restricted activities because of falling concerns.  After completing this eight week course, participants overwhelmingly agree that they can realistically increase their activity level while improving their quality of life and increase their interactions with family and friends while remaining independent.  McLaren Flint has partnered with the Valley Area Agency on Aging of Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee Counties to provide this class.  For information on hosting this at your local senior/community center, or signing up for a future class in your area, please call Deborah Freeman, Injury Prevention Representative at (810) 342-2414 or email Deborah.Freeman@mclaren.org.

Impact Teen Driving

impact teen driving

This evidence-based education is a nationwide program that focuses on the dangers and consequences of reckless and distracted driving.  We provide curriculum, resources, and classes for a variety of audiences including teens, parents, educational leaders and healthcare providers.

Impaired Driving Initiative

This outreach education is provided several times throughout the year.  We combine impairment-simulation goggles with activities such as texting, balance and coordination tasks and even driving a pedal go-kart.  This interactive approach to education mixes motor tasks with visual impairment to simulate with effects of drugs, alcohol and fatigue on driving.  In 2014 we participated in Flint Township's National Night Out, the Genesee County Fair, Back to the Bricks, and Birch Run High School's Homecoming.

If you consume alcohol, know the limit. If your blood alcohol content is .08 percent or greater, it is a crime to operate a motor vehicle. And doing so puts you and other people at risk. In Lapeer County alone, there were 498 arrests for driving under the influence and 93 alcohol-related crashes in 2014.

So how do you know how much is too much? The simple fact is there is no easy answer. Many factors impact the blood alcohol content in your system including how fast alcohol is consumed, food eaten before drinking, family history, physical health, and even age.
