How to Enroll in a Medicare Plan

If you’re turning 65 this year, you’ve probably been asking yourself, “How do I enroll in Medicare?” There are several types of Medicare plans, each with different ways of enrolling. The first step is to enroll in Original Medicare. You’ll need to contact the Social Security Administration for this step. Then you can choose to add a plan that gives you more benefits, or switch to a Medicare Advantage plan. For this step, you’ll contact the insurance plan provider. Let’s take a closer look at how this works.

How to Enroll in Medicare Part A

Some older adults are automatically enrolled in Original Medicare Part A. If you started receiving Social Security benefits or Railroad Retirement Board benefits at least four months before turning 65, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare. You’ll get your Medicare card in the mail when you turn 65.

If you’re not automatically enrolled in Original Medicare, you can enroll online, on the phone, or in person at your local Social Security Administration office.

How to Enroll in Medicare Part B

There are three ways to enroll in Original Medicare Part A and Part B.

  1. You can fill out a Medicare enrollment application online on the Social Security Administration website. It only takes a few minutes, and no additional documentation is required.
  2. You can enroll in Medicare by calling the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY users 1-800-325-0778). The phones are answered weekdays from 7 am to 7 pm.
  3. You can visit your local Social Security office and enroll in person. The Social Security Office Locator can help you find the nearest office.

How to Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan

Once you’re enrolled in Original Medicare Part A and Part B, you can choose to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan. This plan includes all the same benefits as Medicare Part A and Part B. Most plans also offer additional benefits like prescription drug coverage, dental coverage, vision benefits and more. After you compare Medicare Advantage plans in your area, contact the plan provider directly. All you need is your Medicare number, and they’ll take care of the rest.

How to Enroll in Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D plans provide prescription drug coverage. After you enroll in Original Medicare, you can add Part D coverage. This plan is offered by private insurance companies, and it only covers medications. You’ll use two Medicare cards: One for all your health care services, and one for your prescription coverage. You can compare Medicare Part D plans using the Medicare Plan Finder. When you find the plan that best matches your needs, call the insurance company to enroll.
