The McLaren Northern Michigan Nurse Residency Program, provided by Vizient/American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), is a structured curriculum designed for nurses who want to continue their professional growth through curriculum-based learning and practice. The 12-month program is designed to support the successful transition, from novice to proficient, of graduate nurses into a professional RN role in an acute care setting. 

McLaren Northern Michigan Nurse Residency Program was awarded Accreditation with Distinction by the Commission on Accreditation in Practice Transition Programs through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Upcoming 2020 Cohort Start Dates: March, July, and September

New graduate RN full-time positions may be offered on the following units:

  • Medical Surgical - Orthopedics, Neurology, and Urology (Level 2 South)
  • Medical Surgical - Oncology (Level 3)
  • Medical Surgical - Stroke, Trauma, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery (Level 2 North)
  • Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Emergency Department
  • Obstetrics & Pediatrics
  • Acute Rehabilitation

Position Specifics:

  • Full-time positions - 72 hours per pay period
  • 12 hour shifts - nights, days, or variable
  • Weekend Rotations (every other or every third depending on unit needs)
  • Clinical Orientation - minimum 2 days for all RNs joining M
  • Unit Orientation - paired with Preceptors for 8 to 16 weeks depending on unit & progress

Program Summary:

  • 12 month Graduate RN Residency Program Curriculum
  • 4 hours per month in the classroom and Sim Lab
  • Submission & Presentation of an Evidence Based Project required for graduation
  • Qualifications:

    • Must be a graduate of a school of nursing (CCNE or ACEN preferred)
    • Licensed to practice nursing in the State of Michigan
    • Must have less than 1 year of RN/LPN experience
    • ADN or BSN (As a Magnet organization, for those hired into an RN position after January 1, 2014, it is required to obtain a BSN within five years of your start date as an RN with McLaren Northern Michigan. Certification in the specialty area of practice is strongly encouraged.)

    • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider
    • Commitment to the 1 year Residency Program and 2 years of full-time employment
