Believing that all northern Michigan residents deserve the finest health care possible – in the convenience of their own region – McLaren Northern Michigan proudly announces the start of a new journey. Called “Building the Future of Health Care,” this is more than a building project, this is a healing transformation for generations to come.

With site preparation started in 2017, McLaren Northern Michigan is adding a new wing and renovating the current facility and adding 92 private patient rooms, state-of-the-art larger operating rooms, adding observations beds, converting 22 current patient rooms to private, and the flexibility the hospital needs to adapt to advancing technologies and more streamlined services.

Our guiding principle,” to provide health care as we expect for our own family,” helped to inform our design decisions along the way. Our goal was to achieve the highest levels of patient privacy, dignity, facility cleanliness, respect for patients and families, and quality medical care while providing a peaceful and restful stay…just to name a few. Every aspect of the design is based on research; studies show that safety, privacy, flow, and wayfinding are key to a successful patient experience.

Designed by the internationally recognized firm Smith Group JJR Architects, the additional 175,000-square-foot facility will feature amenities and services focused on the health and well-being of patients, as well as the most advanced equipment and surgical technologies. The building will be connected to the current hospital by a multi-story new grand lobby.

With careful positioning, the new wing will overlook Little Traverse Bay while preserving the visual appeal of the Bay, ensuring stress-reducing hospital environment with noise control, a courtyard, and scenic views.
