Catch up on recommended vaccines and well child visits

Well child visits and recommended childhood vaccines are essential in keeping children healthy. Children who are not protected by vaccines are more likely to contract serious, contagious diseases like whooping cough and measles, which can be very serious for babies and young children.

Pediatricians have seen a decline in vaccinations since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Making sure your child sees their doctor regularly for recommended vaccines and well child visits is one of the best things you can do to protect your child from serious diseases. If your child is behind on their immunizations and/or well checks, The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend he or she catch up as soon as possible.

Dr. Sonali Vashi, pediatrician with McLaren Port Huron, says if families have fallen behind on their well visits during the pandemic, they should check with their pediatrician about catching up on any missed vaccinations.

“I strongly recommend all vaccinations per the CDC schedule,” says Dr. Vashi. “Making sure children are up to date with all their vaccinations is the best way to prevent illnesses and to avoid a completely preventable disease outbreak that can have devastating effects.”

In addition to vaccinations, regular visits to your pediatrician are important so your child doesn’t miss out on other important care, such as physical exams and health screenings.

“Regular well visits are an important part of preventative health care for newborns, children and adolescents,” says Dr. Vashi. “These visits are the perfect time to monitor growth and development, conduct routine screenings and lab tests, discuss healthy lifestyles and talk about any health concerns you may have.”
