When fighting left-breast cancer, who's looking out for your heart?
Radiation is highly effective in fighting breast cancer. But when cancer is in the left breast, studies show that the proximity of your heart makes radiation-induced heart disease a serious risk.

To help make sure your heart is as far from the radiation as possible, the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Port Huron uses AlignRT which monitors thousands of points on your skin to ensure you are in the correct position. If you move during treatment, the radiation is automatically stopped until you are back in position.

Partnering to fight breast cancer together

Women in Need

We believe every woman should be educated and empowered to fight breast cancer. To help local women do just that, McLaren Port Huron has partnered with Donna Niester for her annual fundraising event, Wine, Dine & Shop. All funds raised benefit the Donna M. Niester Breast Cancer Fund, which provides education and support for breast cancer programs at McLaren Port Huron.

Donna Niester

One of the funding sources for Women in Need is the Donna Niester Breast Cancer Fund. The fund, named for Donna Niester, a local CPA and healthcare advocate, supports programs that create awareness about breast cancer, provides assistance to women with breast cancer and helps pay for diagnostic test or treatments. The fund is supported through private donations and charitable efforts that take place in the community.
