Psychology and Psychiatry Services

Psychology and psychiatry services are available as part of the Supportive Care Service. These services are available to promote and enhance the quality of life of our patients and their families by treating their emotional and psychosocial issues needs related to the cancer experience. The service has a psychiatrist, licensed clinical psychologist and a licensed social worker.

Services Provided

The staff is available to meet the emotional, social and psychological needs of cancer patients and their families. Some of these services may include:

  • Psychotherapy for patients, couples and families
  • Management of psychiatric medications
  • Treatment of anxiety, depression, grief, bereavement, insomnia/sleep issues, and family conflicts
  • Mental health education for stress and coping skills, relaxation skills (guided imagery, meditation), communication skills (treatment decision-making, communication with providers) and behavioral sleep and pain management skills
  • Assistance in communication between the cancer patient, his/her family, and the patient’s cancer care health team
  • Social worker-provided referrals for community resources, as well as information and referrals for legal concerns (such as advanced directives, power of attorney, and guardianship). Also help for patients and families is available in addressing financial concerns.

Eligibility

All cancer patients and their family members are eligible for these services. Most insurance carriers are accepted. Appointments are made through a patient’s medical or surgical oncologist. Upon check out from your oncologist, a Patient Services Representative can assist in making an appointment for you and/or your family member.
